R. I. P. Clu Gulager 1928-2022

Clu Gulager was one of a handful of actors/musicians I met when I first moved to California while working at a convenience store in LA. He seemed genuinely surprised to be recognized and more so when I spoke to him of his work in “The Glass House”, a television adaptation of a short story by Truman Capote about the brutal reality of the U.S. penal system. It starred Alan Alda right before M*A*S*H* hit big. Gulager played a prison guard trying to break the system before the system broke him.

He was very gracious to a young kid talking to him about a film he had done a decade before and seemed truly delighted to be asked for his autograph. He was one of those great character actors that elevated everything he appeared in, from his early live TV work to “Return of the Living Dead” to “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.”
